What makes Element 8 different?
I never actually set out to create a game—I simply pursued an idea that turned into the world of Element 8. It started with the concept of a board where each element could take control of different parts of the map, with that control shifting or being taken away by other elements. The world was constantly changing, and I thought it would make for a fun, dynamic game, so I began bringing it to life. But as the game took shape, I realized I wanted something more: an immersive experience where players didn’t just move pieces around, but actually felt a personal connection to their elemental characters and the world they were part of. What better way to bring it all to life than by unrolling an old, long-lost map?
I didn’t want this game to feel like an endless loop where everyone starts and ends in the same place. Instead, I decided to create four distinct starting squares, each representing a different corner of an island where two characters reside. In other words, your choice of character determines where you begin on the map. But that didn’t quite feel like enough, so I added one more layer: the ability for players to choose their direction at the start of each turn. This simple change gives players more control over their movements, opening up a world of possibilities. With greater freedom to explore and maneuver, the game encourages the development of attack and evasion strategies, allowing each player to adapt and evolve their approach.
To deepen the strategy and immersion of the game, I wanted each character to have unique powers tied to their respective force of nature. These abilities—and the characters themselves—evolved over years of beta testing, constantly refined until they became what they are today. Now, they’re an essential part of what makes the game feel complete. From the very beginning, these characters have captured the curiosity and attention of everyone who’s supported the development of Element 8, drawing players into a world of honorable combat!
